So you've booked your flight to China. Exciting! And also... terrifying?
If you're feeling overwhelmed, you're not alone. China is unlike anywhere else β different language, different apps, different internet, different everything. But with the right preparation, it goes from "what have I gotten myself into" to "I've got this."
Here's your complete pre-trip checklist. Do these things in order, and you'll be ready.
2 Weeks Before: The Big Three
These three things can ruin your trip if you wait until the last minute.
1. Confirm Your Visa Status
China's visa policy has changed dramatically. As of 2025, citizens from 38+ countries can enter visa-free for 15 days. But the list changes frequently.
Do this now:
- Check the official list for your nationality
- If you need a visa, apply NOW β processing takes 1-2 weeks
- Even if visa-free, confirm your passport has 6+ months validity
Pro tip: Take a photo of your visa/visa-free entry stamp when you get it. You'll need it for hotel check-in.
2. Set Up Mobile Payments
China runs on mobile payments. Cash is increasingly rare. Some places literally cannot accept cash.
Today, do this:
- Download Alipay from your app store
- Register with your passport (Real-Name Verification)
- Add your Visa or Mastercard
- Test it β try buying something (even a $1 app purchase)
Also download WeChat and do the same. Having both is your backup plan.
β οΈ This can take 24-48 hours for verification. Do NOT leave this for the day before. I've seen too many people land in China with no way to pay.
3. Install Your VPN
China blocks Google, Instagram, WhatsApp, Gmail, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter/X, and many more.
You cannot download VPN apps once you're in China β their websites are blocked.
Before you leave:
- Pick a VPN: ExpressVPN, Astrill, or LetsVPN (these are the three that work most reliably)
- Pay for at least one month
- Install on ALL your devices (phone + laptop)
- Test it. Turn it on, check if Google loads. Do this at home, not at the airport.
1 Week Before: Apps & Money
Download These Apps Now
β
WeChat β China's "everything app" (messaging, payments, mini-programs)
β
Alipay β Backup payment + more services
β
DiDi β China's Uber, has English interface
β
Google Translate β Download Chinese offline pack!
β
Pleco β The best Chinese-English dictionary app
β
Your VPN β Already tested, right?
Wait until you arrive to download: Meituan (food delivery), Amap (maps), Dianping (restaurant reviews).
Money Preparation
- Cash: Exchange $200-300 to Chinese Yuan (CNY/RMB) at your bank before leaving. Airport rates are terrible.
- Cards: Call your bank. Tell them you're traveling to China. Ask them to enable international transactions.
- Backup: Bring a second card from a different bank. Cards sometimes get randomly declined.
Packing: What You Actually Need
The Essentials
| Item | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Passport + 2 copies | Need copies for SIM card, hotel, police registration |
| Passport photos x2 | May need for SIM card registration |
| Universal power adapter | China uses Type A/C/I, 220V |
| Any medications you take | Chinese pharmacies carry different brands |
| Tissues/wet wipes | Many public toilets don't provide toilet paper |
| SIM card ejector pin | You don't want to improvise with a paperclip |
| Comfortable walking shoes | You will walk. A lot. |
What NOT to Pack
- β Drone β Many cities ban them, customs may confiscate
- β Too much cash β Over $5,000 equivalent must be declared
- β VPN hardware devices β Can raise questions at customs
- β Politically sensitive books/materials β Just don't
48 Hours Before: Final Checks
β‘ Confirm your flight and check in online
β‘ Screenshot your hotel address (in Chinese characters)
β‘ Download offline Google Maps of your destination
β‘ Install and test your VPN one more time
β‘ Charge everything (power bank too!)
β‘ Save emergency numbers in your phone
β‘ Tell your bank you're traveling
β‘ Email yourself copies of passport, visa, insurance
β‘ Download some Netflix/Spotify for offline (you won't have access in China)
On the Plane
You'll receive a blue Arrival Card. Fill it out before landing β it saves you from doing it in the immigration line.
Key fields:
- "Purpose of visit": Check "Tourism"
- "Address in China": Write your hotel name and address
- "Contact in China": Hotel name is fine
What Happens When You Land
- Health screening (if required) β usually just a temperature check
- Immigration β Show passport + arrival card, get fingerprinted, get stamped
- Baggage claim
- Customs β Walk through "Nothing to Declare" unless you have something to declare
Take a breath. You're in.
You're Ready...
...or at least, 90% ready. The last 10% is the stuff that only comes from experience β like knowing which bathroom has toilet paper, or memorizing "δΈθ¦θΎ£" (bΓΊ yΓ o lΓ β "no spicy") before your first hotpot.
That's exactly why I created the China Arrival Essentials Kit β a 50+ page guide covering everything from visa check to your third day in China, including photo walkthroughs for Alipay setup, printable survival phrase cards, and emergency reference sheets.
